When it comes to your travels I’m pretty sure a camera is high up on your checklist of essential items. There’s so many types of camera to choose from these days and no doubt you’ll be wanting to take the best snaps for your budget when you go on your travel adventure.

The world of photography can be a scary one at times. If you want to take it mega-seriously there are some highly creative and often highly priced DSLR cameras you could buy but these days there’s a great alternative that I think suits most people who love to travel. The compact camera used to mean cheap and cheerful but there’s days they really pack a punch. With the miniaturisation of high power processors, these little cameras now have the ability to take on some of their bigger brothers and I think they often beat them in some areas.

Why choose a compact camera?

All the extra power and versatility takes up space and weight. If you’re travelling with a DSLR you really have to think about how you’re going to carry it. Do you get a camera bag just for it? How much weight is it going to take up in your bags? With a Compact system camera you don’t have any of these problems. They’re light-weight, highly portable, small and still powerful.

Compact cameras used to just come with a built in lens and some clunky software but these days they’re really miniature DSLR cameras. Take the Sony NEX range for example. They have 4 great cameras on the market with varying levels of power and features but they all have the ability to switch lenses. If you’re just starting out I’d recommend sticking with the lens that comes with the camera. The Sony NEX has a pretty awesome 16 – 50mm lens which handles wide angle very well you can get some great telephoto lenses if you’re feeling adventurous. They do a great 55 – 210mm which is enough zoom for most. Interchangeable lenses on smaller cameras used to suffer with quality but the latest Sony lenses are really fantastic.

The 5-T has a DSLR quality sensor which I personally think is one of the most important parts of any camera. They make such a difference to the quality especially the colours of your image. The bigger the sensor the better the quality. Another great feature is the built in wifi. A handy tool when you’re at home but when you’re out travelling it’s a god-send! No need to plug in and transfer your photos to your laptop, just a few clicks and you can transfer wirelessly. One less cable to worry about and it even has NFC capabilities which basically lets you share photos from the camera direct to an NFC enabled smart phone. Everyone loves to share their photos on social networks these days and this camera makes it so easy.

While I’ve been a DSLR lover for a few years now I’m really impressed by the new compact system camera ranges and the level of quality they offer. My biggest issue is always having to carry such a large camera and all the paraphernalia that goes with it. The latest generation compact cameras have the awesome quality without needing a huge camera bag. I have to admit I’m a convert. That much power in a compact camera is a real game-changer for me.
